Coaching Case Study
As a senior manager in Network Rail (Railtrack), Colin Sweeney has varying pressures and conflicts to deal with. Colin has over 15 years' experience of operations and people management but on occasions finds himself in situations where he is not sure of the best approach to take, for a variety of reasons.
Leading Legends works with Colin when these occasions arise. We do not have any set coaching process in place with Colin as his experience means he does not need this level of support. However the Leading Legends coach allocated to Colin provides this ad hoc service whenever required.
The coaching Colin receives usually takes 1-2 hours for each situation and is on a one-to-one, face-to-face basis. Different approaches are taken according to the level and type of support that is needed. The issues where our coach has helped Colin include:
Overcoming a mental block on an important report he was writing
Managing difficult team members
Dealing with organisational conflicts
Colin's coach discussed the options available in each situation, gave advice in terms of legal implications and helped Colin to reach his own conclusions about the best way forward, by looking at the possible outcomes. Where required, personal feelings or frustrations were also listened to. This helped to remove subjectivity from the situations to allow Colin to focus objectively on what needed to be achieved. His coach even used visioning techniques with him. Colin had previously been very sceptical about this approach and believed it could never work with him. However the coach believed this was the only way forward for Colin and within ten minutes Colin was completely refocused!
By using Leading Legends coaching services whenever an unusual and difficult situation has arisen, Colin has successfully taken a positive and appropriate approach to each of these hiccups and continues to use the self-learning in ongoing and different situations.
